Subject: [*] Replace-Existing Hacks 1.3
When you try to save a file over an existing file, you get a dialog asking
"Replace Existing <filename>?" If you wish to get rid of that dialog, or at
least change the default button, this TeachText document (in setext format)
tells several ways to do it with ResEdit. There are separate instructions
for System 6, System 7.0, and System 7.1.
The previous version had a bug: command-period pushed the wrong button.
This version is also simpler.

Can someone tell me how to recover the Menu bar space now being wasted by
the little Balloon question mark?
I was forced to System 7 when the Centris came in, but have otherwise been
able to eliminate most of the cutesy things that one would not use after
day one.
There actually seems to be one positive feature of Sys 7 (though it hardly
makes up for the hits in memory and disk requirements and in speed). The
AliasDirector control panel helps eliminate a lot of desktop clutter. And
with PwrSwitcher, one almost regains control of his own fate by keyboard
without having to mouse around unnecessarily. That almost makes up for
any number of things which no longer work unless you spring for more cash
for gratuitous (but not free) ungrades (oops, Freudian?) that is, upgrades.
Direct reply would be appreciated -- thanks!

Subject: AWS 95/Networking CDROMS
We will soon begin networking several CD-ROMs using an Apple Workgroup Server
95
and we would be interested in hearing from anyone with experience doing this.
We
plan to daisy-chain four Apple CD300 CD-ROM drives off of the server. The
Workgroup Server 95 is running System 7.0.1 and AppleShare Pro 1.0.1b1.
We experienced problems previously when we tried to daisy-chain more than 1
CD-ROM drive using a Mac IIci. On the IIci, a single Apple CD300 drive
functioned perfectly, but when we connected 2-6 drives the machine would
freeze
up, give frequent error messages, or would not boot up at all. The SCSI ID
numbers were unique and a SCSI terminator was in place at the end of the
chain.
This problem surfaced on several IIci's we tried. Any comment on our upcoming
project on the Workgroup Server 95 or our past experience on the IIci's is
welcomed.
Thank you.

Uh, not quite true, Anders. A friend at West Virginia University called
asking if I knew how to get a copy of the Stuffit Lite shareware program.
We each fired up NCSA Telnet, authorized FTP and MacBinary, and I "put"
the installer SEA on his hard disk (binary option).
I think that worked because maybe a Stuffit SEA has only one fork. Or it
was NCSA Telnet on each side encoding/decoding MacBinary on the fly. Or
it was a combination of dumb luck and black magic.
It is amazing how much I can do without understanding butkus.

Subject: Changing Default Window Positions
Is there a way (extension or something) to modify the default
position of windows automatically open by applications that don't
record where the window was when it was closed? More specifically,
the screen it was on?
I'm using a Mac SE/30 and have an external 24 bit color. For programs
that don't need a big, color screen, ie, usually things like status
displays, I'd like them to default to the internal 1 bit monitor since
things will update faster there and also stay out of the way.
Unfortunately, many of these programs, such as UUPC, don't save where
the window was when it was closed/quit and the next time it is run,
it jumps back to the default monitor, the 24 bit color screen. I'm
away of extensions that change the depth when an application is run
or switched to, but if one screen is already and always 1 bit, I'd
rather things defaulted to it.
Thanks for any help/advice.

Subject: Debinhexing on a PC?
Hi everybody!
Quiet recently the PC machines in our mixed environment (with respect to Macs
and PCs) got access to E-mailing on the internet. Luckily, I stick to my Mac
but others with DOS-PCs ran into a serious problem. Occasionally, binhexed
enclosures attached to E-mail messages from Macintosh computers end up on the
PCs which cannot (at least to my knowledge) decoded on PCs. I find the
situation amusing but I do not want to help out for the next couple of years.
Does anybody know of a program which runs on a DOS-PC which is able to decode
binhexed files? I am almost certain that something like that must exist but I
could not find any hints on the internet!?
Please send information directly to me (hammers@haema101.gsf.de) I will
summarize and post it to the net.
Hoping that this is not a FAQ,

...trying to help the Free [Medical] Clinic again. They have an HP
DeskWriter, bought in 1990, that works fine with their SEs running System
6.0.7. Trouble is, they now need to pair it with their Classic II (4M RAM)
running System 7.0.1. It works--to a point: it'll print several fine
pages or a partial page, but then complain about "Datacomm buffer overrun
- no DTR handshaking." The HP manual says that means "...there is a
problem with the interface cable or the interface connection," but I've
now done enough testing with different cables, ports, and machines to be
satisfied that even with a fine cable and fine interface connection, the
problem persists: it quits printing after <1 page or a few pages.
My current hypothesis: the HP driver may be too old (1990) to know what to
do with System 7. So I just downloaded the DeskWriter 4.0 driver. BUT,
according to the enclosed documentation, if I install it, most of their
(quite old) software will no longer work, and they can't afford to upgrade
all that software.
Is my hypothesis (that the problem is a too-old DeskWriter driver) correct?
If so, what is the earliest version of the DeskWriter driver that will work
with System 7.0.1 (and, we hope, with most of their old software)? If not,
do you have other ideas about what could be the problem? Can a Classic II
run with System 6.0.7? Would that help?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: Enquiry: Expandable Fields in Filemaker Pro
I'd like to use FileMaker Pro to manage the address & phone numbers in
my Filofax. The trouble is that people have varying numbers of phone
and fax numbers (between one and four), and I'd rather not have blank
fields being printed out as they take up a lot of space. Is there a
way of getting FileMaker to print fields conditionally on their being
filled? Or is there a way of getting it to expand the field _and_
print the expanded version when extra lines are added (so all the
phone numbers would go in one field)?
And can FileMaker then print the results in Fiilofax sized pages,
perhaps two per A4 page?
If FileMaker can't do all this, is there something else which can?

Subject: Enquiry: Word5 Styles
We all know that WYSIWYG has many advantages over something like
LaTeX. But something LaTeX does very well is to separate the data-file
>From the style-file. Thus an author can supply a book as a data-file
in standard LaTeX, and the editor just invokes a style-file which
re-defines styles and settings and so changes the appearance of the
text to the required house style. The style-file redefines the
standard styles, the tab stop length, the standard line spacing, page
size, style of headers and footers, etc.
Is there a neat way of doing this in Word5? I found the trick of
opening a template file while in the Define Styles dialogue box ... so
the styles of the template file override those already defined. But
can the other settings also be imposed together with these?

Of course, Nisus also supports Append Cut, Append Copy, and Swap Paste,
and since Nisus changes its menus on the fly to reflect the modifier

Gatekeeper has never distributed updates as patches. When a new release

Not until the next virus hits. The Gatekeeper update was a bug-fix and an

Subject: HQX downloads (A)
For anyone who is still stumped,
I was once too about HQX formats and how to get downloads to convert
>From HQX to something usable. Here is the answer. HQX files that arrive on
a
download onto your Mac should always be TEXT format. Never convert these to
binary format, as all the conversion codes are in the HQX TEXT files
(essentially written in a skewed ASCII). HQX
files are easiest read using either a BinHex 4.0 converter (like Compact Pro
1.33 ($25 Shareware)),
or Stuffit Expander 3.0.1 (free)
or later. The application used to read these HQX
files varries (sp?) from download to download. Thus it is wise to have both
Stuffit and a Binhex 4.0 reader on your hard disk, if you plan to do many
downloads from the archives. A very few files will have .sit that can also be
decompressed using Stuffit Expander.
Some downloads will have .Zip as an extension, which can be extracted using
ZipIt 1.1.1 ($10 Shareware).
Other downloads have a .GIF extension. The .GIF format is the
Graphics Interchange Format for most desktop Machines. GIFConverter 2.2.10
($40 Shareware) can be used to read these files as direct downloads from
archives around the world. This software will then convert the document to
the native PICT, TIFF or other graphics formats that fit Macintosh
Paint/Draw/Desktop Publishing software.
Disclaimer: I have used each of these softwares on my machine, and have
encountered small bugs which are usually the result of an error-full download,
or corrupted archive files. These shareware packages are written here only as
example packages that can help in downloading from archives over FTP, Gopher,
and Telnet. Others may be equally or better suitable for one's needs, that I
have yet to encounter.
Hope this helps,
Even though by some eyes this question may appear to be a FAQ.

Josh,
I have a utility called 'DriverMaker' that will allow you to do what you
want. You can create the partitions (both MAC system) then use the apple
HD setup app. to UPDATE them to the proper junk. (they will go back to
looking like 'real' Apple disks, assuming that you have an Apple HD.
Take a look at M-1 & M-2 -- how do you think that I did it? :-)
The reason that I sent this to the net -- is that the Apple HD Setup
program does NOT allow you to partion the HD as two HFS disks. At least
not that I am aware of. I thought that some of you might be interested
in the answer, also.

I expected to see those "keyboards" listed before the sounds ("Klang").
Unfortunately, the name for keyboard in German is "Tastatur" and thus
they got translated to "Tastaturerweiterungen" (keyboard extensions).
So I found them between the sounds and the fonts ("Zeichensaetze").
I think I knew why I wanted that US version right away.

Stanford distributes a small brochure on energy conservation to all its
students, called "Guide to Environmentally Sound Living at Stanford." In
it is a fairly lengthy and detailed discussion of this problem, written by
Timothy Oey, an Apple engineer. He suggests that you should turn your Mac
off if it will not be used for more than 8 hours. In fact, if you turn it
on and off once per day, it is likely to survive twice as long as if you
leave it on continuously. In fact, an argument can be made for cycling the
computer on/off often during your first year, so that any defect will be
more likely to show up while your warranty is intact. (Note the liberal
use of the word "likely." This is all based on statistics.)
Either way, the computer will probably become obsolete long before it
fails, so it isn't really something to worry about much. Your approach of
turning off the monitor saves considerable energy. Go ahead and turn your
CPU off over night also.
If anyone wants more information, send e-mail.

What about all the unix machines around the world which is always running.
Thats the typical habit regarding these machines. Of course unix
takes longer time to start up, but if it was a real problem for the hardware
if the machines was running all the time, I guess that the habit would
change... :(
Not to mention all the servers, both Macintosh and unix and DOS and....
I dont think it is any significant difference in quality between
typically unix machines and Macintoshes and ... whatever.
But it would be a good idea either to turn off the power on the monitor,
or, (better:) install a small screen saver (f.i. BasicBlack).

I have a DEC RZ-58 (Micropolis 1508). The difference between the DEC
and Micropolis stock PROM's is that the sense of the "Power-on Spin-Up"
jummper is reversed. On the RZ-58, no jummper means "wait for spin-up

Subject: Pagemaker 4.2 woes, part n+1: Personal LaserWriter NTR
Colleagues,
A few months/weeks back, I wrote regarding problems printing from PageMaker
4.2 to a LaserWriter II/f, using the LaserWriter 8.0 driver. Thanks to the
suggestion from several fellow readers, the solution we've used is to disable
PageMaker's own printer driver and route directly via Apple's, pressing the
Option key before selecting the Print command.
However, the problem now reasserts itself. In the process of expanding the
installed printer base, we've purchased several Personal LaserWriter NTR's.
To summarize their performance with PM: YOU CAN'T PRINT ON THEM ! Here's a
list of what I've tried so far:
* Got the latest PPD from Adobe.
* Tried using LW 8.0:
- Without Option, issues a "cannot print, lost contact with printer" error
message, and the printer resets, producing the startup page.
- With Option, arbitrarily crops off the first few inches from the top
and left sides of the print image, leaving a blank gap at the bottom
and right.
* Tried using LW 7.1.2:
- Without Option, issues a Postscript error message, "configuration error,
Offending Command: setpagedevice".
- With Option, after AGES, produces a printout with the left and right
margins cropped off (beyond the margins set on the document).
* Tried using LW 7.1.1 (Spanish version):
- Without Option, issues the same Postscript error as 7.1.2.
- With Option, produces output with the same cropping error as 7.1.2
* Generating a Postscript file with LW 8.0 and dumping it with the LW Utility
resulted in a totally mangled output. Fonts and text placement were not
respected, the image was cropped arbitrarily and paper size was not
maintained.
All this was done with a 16 page document set on US Legal paper size. We used
both a PowerBook 180 and a LC II, with System 7.1 in both US and Spanish
versions. The 7.1.1 Spain driver was the one included on the software disks
with the printer.
Could anybody who has successfully printed large-sized documents set in
PageMaker 4.2 on a Personal LW NTR please tell me how it is done ?
(I should mention that the same document, on the SAME machine was
successfully printed at the first try on a LaserWriter II/f, with LW 8.0)
Thanks in advance for your help.

The real problem turned out to be a wrong IP number that I was given by our
system operator. This IP number already was in use. From some folks I got the
hint to upgrade to MacTCP 2.0.3, although MacTCP 1.1.1 works correctly with
MacX. I did upgrade and the 2.0.3 version reports the errors in clear messages
instead of only producing the error-sound. After correcting the IP address it
perfecly worked.

Since I am the veru happy owner of Public Utilities, I can answer this
(although a bit lately, sorry).
The background-running component of PU is called Prevention. It is
absolutely unobtrusive if the disk is OK, because it performs a detect-only
scan, relying on PU itself if it finds something wrong (when this happens,
it indeeds pops up an alert/dialog box proposing to launch PU's Disk
Repair). So you may find this annoying. In addition, (erxcept from the
manual) "Prevention does not check for minor, non-data threatening errors,
such as bad modification dates, or problems which take a lot of memory to
check".
If you want complete background, automatic repairs, see MacTools. It does
exactly what you want (repair what it can and log errors), however I found
background operation more obtrusive and not very reliable (i.e. the
scheduler often fails); in addition it's much slower than PU.
To come back to Prevention, it's really unobtrusive: you can set the amount
of CPU it takes when scanning, it starts only when the Mac is idle and it
stops as soon it detects keyboard/mouse activity.
I hope this helps.

This is not really an operating systems issue, but rather an issue that
deals with the individual application (in this case, the finder). Most
word processors save the file to a temporary name before deleting the
original file. The finder does not do this. IMHO, the best way for the
finder to do this would be to move the original file to the trash before
copying the file. I mentioned this to Developer Support once. Their
response was "great idea". The result was, new version; no change in
behavior.
BTW, It turns out that there is a call in the operating system to swap the
contents of two files while keeping all the appropriate catalog information
(creation date, type, creator, etc) the same. This makes swapping files
really easy.

Once, using WriteNow 1.0x and a DA called AutoSave, on a Mac Plus
with two floppies, I had something like that happen. I was alternately
saving to either floppy as a working backup, and AutoSave would kick
in every few minutes as well. WriteNow deletes the file before it
saves the new one, but on one save, it ran out of space on the floppy,
so it failed to save a new copy after deleting the original. This
so confused it that it crashed, corrupting the document in memory
and on the other floppy. I was livid, but luckily WriteNow documents
are fairly easy to recover and I was at the time relatively proficient
with F-Edit (this is at least five years ago). So I recovered my 15
page philosophy paper and then set up a system that had the file on
three disks, one of which was always out of the Mac. :-)
Another time I saved a 5K WriteNow document with the same name as
a 4 MB database (I knew I was replacing something, so I didn't read
the warning dialog). It took me a weekend to recover the database.
So, yes, I agree that this design is a MAJOR problem at times.

Hey, I've got a better solution yet! Why doesn't the Mac simply MOVE
the old file to the Trash, then write the new one? Sure, it wouldn't
work with big files, but then you could get a message saying that
there wasn't enough room unless you emptied the Trash on that floppy.
Seems perfectly reasonable to me. I'd also recommend TrashMan to automatically
empty the trash of items that have been in there for a certain number
of days.
cheers ... -Adam

Yes there is. Not only there IS, but a fabulous piece of utility
too!!
MultiClip, from Olduvai Corp. You copy/cut as many items as you
like sequentialy. Then whenever you fancy, you start pasting. (you
hold the option key <or assign any other key combination> while
you're copying/cutting/pasting, and voila)! You can chose the paste
to work as a queue or as a stack i.e. paste in the order you
cut/copied or the reverse order - (aka FIFO or LIFO). - *IMMENSE*
power.
Also option+command-V pastes the clip off but leaves it accessible
in a scrapbook-like facility. Option-command-R pastes and deletes
the clip, just like the original Mac paste. - While this inevitibly
involves some maintenance of the multiclip file, it makes clips
power-failure/crash proof, and comprises copy+paste-to-scrapbook in
one operation.
I've been copying odd pieces of code from old source files,
switching to the new source file and pasting those bits in (instead
of numerous switch-copy-switch-paste's). I've been opening
Info-mac's 'all-files', copying sequentialy the names of the new
files I want to download, then when I'm done picking the files,
open a new document, paste the file-names in, and with a GREP or
two create a batch file that downloads the files in the background.
And so on!!! - endless possibilities and benefits.
The one imperfectness of MC is that due to its somewhat unusual
nature (crossbreed of application and INIT), in some circumstances
it won't let you restart/shut-down, and since no natural way of
quiting MC is provided, you must force it to quit using
cmd-option-esc (don't remember how you do it in Sys 6).
Having said that, the version I recieved (2 months ago) is 2.17c of
*August '91*!!. They are supposed to be shipping a new version
(MultiClipPro 3.0) these very days; calling them about 2 weeks ago
they told me to (be a good boy and) wait patiently for my
upgrade-note within the first 10 days of September.
MacWeek's Don Crabb often mentions a list of the 'ten extensions
Apple should have incorporated into the OS' (or somesuch). I'd
certainly put MultiClip up for such a list!
Disclaimer!!!(In spite of the above sounding like I'm at *least*
Olduvai's marketting manager), I have no affiliation or any other
relation to Olduvai Corp other than bein a VERY happy user of
MultiClip (will be a even happier when it's integration into the
system gets better, - I presume in V3.0).
Hope this helps.
